more paintings about buildings and rocks
    July 1-24 2010
Exhibition of work by Victoria Ward and Gary Blundell. The intriguing title was chosen as a play on words based on a record from 1978 by the New York based band the Talking Heads (“more songs about buildings and food”). This record, and others that emerged during the late seventies, instigated Blundell and Ward’s exploration into radical thinking and art making. “more paintings about buildings and rocks” refers to the fact that they generally focus their work on geology and architecture.

    Dwellings...
    July 16-30 2010
Dwellings An exploration of space with Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle & Noelia Marziali The spaces where we live can dictate much about our lives. The objects that surround us, the environments we create and live within, the choice we make when we bring something new into our homes. These are the spaces we dwell within. Internal dwellings of thought and ponder directly meeting with our personal residence. Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle and Noelia Marziali have joined up to explore these ideas. In this show they have created rooms to dwell within utilizing Noelia's paintings and Kathleen’s metal work to create finished rooms. The works will be set up in tableaus to depict the artist idea of a finished working space. A glimpse through a window into the lives of others. Our dwellings are what we surround ourselves with daily, whether it be the great out doors, that crooked tree of the corner of your lot, the plastic duck your granny gave you that simply must always find a space on your mantle…these artist have taken these ideas and created a depiction of their personal interpretations on this theme. They will welcome you into their bedroom Friday July 16 at The Art Hive as part of the ongoing Hand of The Maker series at 6pm. This show runs July 16-30. 705-754-0021 10239 Hwy 118, Haliburton ON

Highlands Summer Festival Presents the comedy Sylvia
    July 19-30 2010
Greg returns to his Upper West Side apartment in the late afternoon accompanied by Sylvia, a beautiful, frisky young blonde he has just picked up in the park. He worries about how Kate, his wife, is going to respond to Sylvia, a dog he found—or perhaps she has found him. Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes, but none is as immediately delicious and dizzy as the one that begins the redeeming affair in A.R. Gurney’s comedy, Sylvia. Sylvia offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of priceless and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives. This hilarious romantic triangle is for anyone who has ever owned a dog, loved a dog, and even those who don’t believe that a dog is man’s best friend. (Some language may not be suitable for younger audience members.) Opens July 19 for eight performances including 20, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30

Highlands Summer Festival Presents Charlie Farquharson and Dem Udders
    July 26-27 2010
We are delighted to welcome to our stage, Don Harron, one of Canada’s most extraordinary talents, a modern “Renaissance Man”, whose entertainment career includes achievements as an actor, writer, broadcaster, comic and producer. Don is probably best known to Canadians for the five years he spent as the popular host of the CBC radio series Morningside, for which he won an ACTRA award. Though Don is usually cast in dramatic roles, he has made thousands laugh with his alter ego characters–especially Charlie Farquharson. Charlie was first introduced to Canadians in 1952 at The Spring Thaw - a revue in which Don has been involved since its creation. He later appeared on the US comedy show Hee Haw. Don will present two performances featuring his wit and wisdom as well as a visit from Charlie. Don will be joined by Claudette and pianist David Warrack for these performances. July 26 and 27 only.
